ABOUT US

Located near the Columbia River in Eastern Washington, Darden Welsh Ponies enjoys the virtual year-round warmth and sunshine of the low desert. This climate provides the perfect environment for raising ponies, most of which can comfortably foal outside on pasture. With the unique and diverse terrain, there are endless trails and obstacles to help keep our ponies well rounded, both physically and mentally.

Darden Welsh Ponies originated in 1965 and the "Tri-Cities" has served as our home since 1961.  We are active members of the Welsh Pony and Cob Society of America and have been since purchasing our first Welsh in 1965, we pride ourselves on our reputation and the quality of animals we raise.

Our start came when we began a search for suitable ponies for our children, Andy and Denise, at the time just 2 and 1. With the purchase of our first stallion, Caerwyn Hi Ho and a mare, Skylane Dawn, our focus turned from ponies for our children to becoming serious breeders of the Welsh Pony, at the time Section A's. By the end of our first year, our herd grew to three mares with foals, a yearling, and our beloved stallion, Hi Ho. We were sold on the Welsh Pony and how wonderful their dispositions were.

In the years that followed, we had parted with some of the original ponies and obtained two Heatherstone Mandarin x Harford Foreststar fillies from the Jacklin Seed Company (JSCO). It was through these fillies that the foundation of our breeding program began. Later acquisitions were the very successful stallion Farnley Nero (sold to California) and his son, Kayruss Knight from Russ Pfeiffer (Kayruss).

With the diversity of our bloodlines and the research we put into our breeding program, Darden Welsh Ponies began to establish itself as quality breeders of Welsh. In 1966, Dennis and Darlene expanded their knowledge into the performance ring and began to show in roadster classes. Our foundation stallion Hi Ho became an accomplished roadster pony that went on to win the Roadster Championship at the PNE in British Columbia. After this win, Hi Ho was sold to Heather Maxey of Vancouver, BC.

Our colt, Prince Andy (from Skylane Dawn) was entered into the show ring when he was three. Shown extensively in western, saddle seat, pleasure driving, combination, trail, obstacle driving and yes – even raced – he established himself as a tough competitor. Prince Andy was undefeated for two years in pleasure driving, often competing against horses as well as Welsh Ponies. During this time, our youngest daughter Denise chose JSCO Blizzard for her show pony and competed successfully in saddle seat, western, pleasure driving, and combination. Between Prince, Blizzard, Denise and Andy, they teamed up to be an awesome foursome in the open pairs competition. After their heydays, both beloved ponies retired as lesson ponies for our grandchildren and remained in our family throughout the years.

While still devoted to our passion for the Welsh Pony, we settled down to raise our family. After years of inactivity, our daughter Andy began looking for suitable ponies for her children, Justin and Brittney. Without thought, we again turned our focus on Welsh Ponies, this time deciding on Section B's.  It is a decision our entire family continues to be passionate about….
